Emil Zsigmondy -  was one of the finest mounteineer in the history of the sport. His book " Im Hochgebirge"; was first published in 1889 , four years after his fatal accident while attempeting a new route on the south face of La Meije. This coincided with one of the most insular periods  of British Alpinism, and his book ( or indeed any other account of Continental mountaineering of that time ) was never trandlated.

• This is therefore the first English edition. It has been produced to the highest standarts in a limited edition of only 300 numbered copies, and contains 16 full-plate illustrations by E.T.Compton and 180 vignettes many by Zsigmondy himself. No expense has been spared in retaining the format and flavour of the original book.
• The climbs described - many of the first ascents - range through almost all regions of the Austrian Alps, to the Dolomites, the Valais, and the Dhauphiné. Additional material includes the original rewiew from the Alpine Journal and the account by Emil´s brother of the Meije accident from the Oesterreichischen Alpen-Zeitung.

Ludwig Gramminger ist ein Bergretter der ersten Stunde. Seit 1925 Mitglied der Bergwacht, hat er wie kein anderer vor und seit seiner aktiven Zeit diese Organisation, ihr Bild in der Öffentlichkeit, ihren Ruf unter den Bergsteigern und ihre Leistungsfähigkeit im Dienst Verunglückter geprägt und weitergebracht. Wickwire is one of the best American mountaineers, having done the first American ascent of K2, and much more. Here is the story of a man who has come closer to death more times than most of us.  In 1978 Jim Wickwire became the first American to top 28,250-foot K2, the second highest peak after Mt. Everest (for some, his solo bivouac near the summit the same night is an even greater feat).
